“Heinzels Wintermärchen”
Cologne's Old Town

Every year, the “Heinzelmännchen” (House Elves) transform Cologne’s Old Town into a Christmassy fairytale world.

The Winter Fairytale of “Heinzels Wintermärchen” is not only the oldest but also the biggest of Cologne’s Christmas markets. The lanes or alleys at the Christmas market are arranged according to themes, rather like the guilds in days gone by. As well as a Craftsmen’s Alley, with an extraordinary range of artisans demonstrate their particular skills, there is also a Sweets Alley, for example, where all kinds of delicious things to eat are on offer, or a Toys Alley that will delight the hearts of children. Scattered among them are traditional taverns such as the Büble Alpe or the Weisse Glögg, looking like a Scandinavian wooden church, each with its own individual architecture and each inviting people to come in and enjoy themselves.

Amid this fairytale atmosphere, a unique ice skating rink is to be found on Heumarkt. With this romantic ice event, the Heinzelmännchen have created what is arguably the most attractive inner-city open-air ice rink anywhere in Germany. It offers everything a skater’s heart could desire, with space for long runs, alleys for playing ice stock curling, and much more besides.
